Fishing News Editorial Assistant

The weekly title Fishing News – the voice of commercial fishing in the UK and Ireland since 1913 ¬– is looking to recruit an editorial assistant, to work approximately 20 hours per week from home on a freelance basis.

Fishing News is a growing, dynamic brand publishing content and engaging with its audience across print, online and social media, as well as through the prestigious Fishing News Awards.

The Fishing News readership is very diverse, ranging from skippers of small inshore boats to owners of £25m trawlers, as well as politicians, regulators and environmental NGOs. The stories we run reflect this, varying from interviews with ministers to features on new vessels, stories about unusual catches and ground-breaking fisheries science. Our contributors, who come from very different backgrounds, add to this mix.

Editorial assistant role:
Key responsibilities
• Researching and writing original news stories and features
• Sourcing pictures and obtaining additional information and quotes for stories
• Sub-editing contributed news stories and features
• Proof-reading completed pages
• Assisting with the Fishing News Awards nominations process

Essential qualities
• Meticulous sub-editing and proof-reading skills
• Ability to work reliably under pressure, to tight deadlines
• Experience of writing about fishing, boats, machinery and/or technology
• Excellent inter-personal skills
• Knowledge about the UK and Irish commercial fishing industry would be advantageous but not essential

The 20 hours would need to be worked between 9am on a Monday and 6pm on a Thursday. Availability on Thursdays is essential, but there would be a degree of flexibility regarding the remaining hours.
The position would be based around working from home, in close contact with the managing editor and editor.

A competitive rate of pay will be offered to the right candidate.
